Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

Uma Thurman stars as Sissy Hankshaw, a free-spirited woman who hits the road to find her place among a rebellious troupe of cowgirls — all while navigating the whims of a flamboyant drag queen employer. Gus Van Sant’s 1993 indie queer classic blends whimsy, romance, and rugged individualism into a tender, offbeat tale of identity and belonging.

This screening is part of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival’s retrospective program — a curated nod to groundbreaking LGBTQIA+ cinema that paved the way for today’s stories. Whether you’ve seen it before or are discovering it for the first time, this one’s a cult favourite worth revisiting.
