History Walk: Shoot Out in Treasury Gardens

Step back into 1872 colonial Melbourne for a deeply human, queer-led walk through one of the city’s most storied green spaces — Treasury Gardens. This isn’t your typical heritage stroll. It’s a heartfelt, contemplative journey into the lives of Edward Feeney and Charles Marks — two men whose bond, forged in the halls of Melbourne Hospital, ended in a pact as dramatic as it was tragic.

Together, we’ll trace their footsteps across the CBD, starting outside the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre and winding our way to Old Melbourne Goal. Along the way, we’ll pause to consider: What was it like to love another man in a time that offered no language — let alone safety — for such feelings? How did they plan to enact their pact? And what legacy did they unknowingly leave behind for those of us who walk this city today?

This 6km walk is graded as moderate by the Australian Walking Tracks Grading System, but don’t let that intimidate you — it’s all on level, paved paths. We’ll meet at 10am outside the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, 210 Lonsdale St, Melbourne — easy to reach by tram or train, and we’ll cap the group at 15 to keep things intimate and safe.

After the walk, we’ll gather at a nearby cafe for an optional afternoon tea or cold drink — bring your own lunch and water, because hydration matters, especially in the Melbourne sun.

Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are your best friends here. And if history, queer heritage, and gentle exploration are your jam? You’re going to love this.
