Queer Bird Walk: Royal Park Rendezvous

Hey queer nature lovers, it’s time to dust off the binoculars and step into the bird-rich greenery of Royal Park — one of Melbourne’s most rewarding urban wild spaces. Hosted by the delightful Melbourne Queer Birders Collective, this isn't just a walk — it’s a shared moment of quiet joy, curiosity, and community under the wattles and gum trees.

Royal Park’s wide-open spaces and pockets of native bushland make it a perfect place to spot everything from cheeky Superb Fairy-wrens darting through shrubs to the elusive Australian Owlet-nightjar perched in a tree hollow — yes, really, in inner Melbourne! You’ll also likely cross paths with Purple Swamphens, Spotted Pardalotes, and the occasional Musk Lorikeet, all with a soundtrack of bell miners and honeyeaters.

This isn’t a race or a checklist — it’s an invitation to slow down, look up, and share what you see. Whether you’re spotting your first bird or your thousandth, the vibe is welcoming, inclusive, and full of quiet wonder. The group caps each walk at 35 people, so grab your spot early — and if your plans change, please cancel your booking so others can join.

What to bring? Binoculars (if you’ve got them), a sun hat, a water bottle, snacks, and comfy shoes — the paths are mostly hard-surfaced, but it’s a 4.5 km loop if you go the full distance. There’s a handy toilet at the Oak St carpark, so swing by before we head off.

Accessibility? Royal Park has reasonably good paths, with some inclines and dirt trails in parts. The wetlands and Trin-warren Tam-boore are wheelchair-friendly, while the woodland area has hills but is still manageable. You’re welcome to peel off early if needed — the magic is in the moments, not the mileage.
