Queer Volleyball #4 for The Food Angels Mutual Aid
We cordially invite you to come and join us for a (very friendly) indoor beach volleyball tournament, with funds raised going to The Food Angels Mutual Aid!
Grab your friends, come and heal your sports trauma or just get silly in the sand with us for a good cause. There will be (inexperienced but cute) referees, queers who can tear up the court without breaking 3 inch acrylics, first timers, seasoned players from the weekday leagues with lots of tips and tricks to share, yummy food and booze/drinks available for purchase and great vibes. You don’t need to have any volleyball skills at all, there will be an hour at the start of the event to practice. Bring your friendly local ally as a plus one, or bring the whole yah yahs crew to sweat it out after Thursday night!
Event is 18+, ally and very beginner friendly. All ticket and food profits go toward the fundraiser. Profits from drinks won't go towards the donations.
How it will run: You'll play in a team of 5 or 6 people, which will be randomized per game. Games are 10 mins and after two games you get a break. You can leave whenever you want (just let the person behind the bar know). Free play/practice is from 6:30pm and games start at 7pm. You can read the rules of rebound volleyball here.
While this event is a fundrasier we still want to create a fun, queer friendly space that is accessible to all, regardless of your income!
**If you'd like to volunteer to be a ref and get free entry, let us know! No experience needed.
Sliding scale ticket prices available with discounted entry for PoC and free for Mob who would like to join in the fun but don't have the capacity to donate extra funds at the moment.
Who are Food Angels?
A mutual aid group providing home cooked meals for LGBTQIA+ folks in crisis in so-called Melbourne since 2020, delivering food once or twice a week and also cooking for certain groups in need (i.e. a big cook up is done on Invasion day for Mob). At present The Food Angels is completely decentralised across so-called Melbourne, and cooks prepare food in their own home which is then picked up and delivered by our drivers to recipients homes.
Accessibility:
Unfortunately the space is not wheelchair accessible. There are very narrow hallways and small bathrooms. There are no steps in the venue - the entrance are huge slidey doors that will be open. The space is quite echoey and noisy and can be overstimulating, there is space outside to take a lil break from the noise. There will be music playing as well and the sound of whistles and people having lots of fun. If you want to check out the space beforehand to suss it out - you’re welcome to come and cheer our volleyball team on a Tuesday evening.
COVID Safety:
Masks are strongly encouraged when moving around the space / using the bathrooms, a bit harder to wear them while playing. Please RAT beforehand if you can, we will have masks available at the event. Please let us know in the week after the event if you contract Covid so we can inform attendees. We will have some hepa filters in the space, doors will be open.
Transport:
There is on-street parking, trams along Sydney road and a bus up Victoria street, highly recommend carpooling with your buddies.
