Two Times João Liberada - A Thought-Provoking Trans Cinema Experience

Step into the captivating world of contemporary Lisbon where art meets identity in this compelling 70-minute Portuguese masterpiece. Director Paula Tomás Marques presents a sharp and sardonic exploration of storytelling ownership and trans representation.

The narrative follows a trans actress named João who lands what seems to be her dream role - portraying João Liberada, an 18th-century gender-nonconforming nun who dared to pursue sexual freedom. However, the excitement quickly turns to frustration when her creative vision clashes with the cis male director's perspective, particularly regarding the tragic ending of this historical figure's story.

As noted by critic Stephen A Russell: "Marques' treat is a mighty reckoning with who gets to tell what story and how, and I was all the way in."
