SQS Sundays #11 – Watsons Bay, Federation Cliff Walk + Picnic

Grab your picnic blanket, pack your favourite snacks, and join us for a sun-drenched, laid-back LGBTQIA+ gathering with spectacular coastal views. This isn’t your average Sunday — it’s a leisurely walk through one of Sydney’s most iconic coastal landscapes, ending with shared laughter, good conversation, and maybe a local coffee.

Start your day at Circular Quay Wharf 2 — jump on the F9 ferry line at 11:15am (arrive by 11:00am) for a breezy 23-minute ride to Watsons Bay. You’ll get a complimentary coffee from the Watsons Bay Hotel, then settle into Robertson Park for your picnic with friends old and new.

After refuelling, we’ll head up Old South Head Road to Macquarie Lighthouse — Australia’s oldest lighthouse site — and find our picnic spot in Lighthouse Reserve. Then we’ll take a shortened Federation Walk, passing South Head Signal Station and into Gap Park, where you can climb Jacob’s Ladder, visit the Gap Viewing Platform, and stand at the Wreck of the Dunbar site. From Gap Bluff, soak in panoramic views of the skyline, harbour, and rugged coastal cliffs — a true Sydney postcard moment.

After lunch, we’ll stroll along the lower roadway to Cliff Street, then to Camp Cove Beach and Green Point Reserve for a rest, before heading back to Watsons Bay for drinks and the ferry home. The whole walk is a relaxed 5km — perfect for all fitness levels — and should take around two hours, including stops for selfies and scenic gazing.
