The Standard Life of a Temporary Pantyhose Salesman

Join us for an evening of thoughtful conversation and literary exploration as we delve into Aldo Busi’s sprawling, semi-autobiographical picaresque novel, The Standard Life of a Temporary Pantyhose Salesman. First published in Italian in 1985, this work cemented Busi’s status as one of Italy’s most original and provocative contemporary writers.

Follow Angelo Basarovi, a highly educated gay man in his thirties, as he navigates the dual worlds of academia and the hosiery industry. Accompanying the factory owner on sales trips across Western Europe, Angelo’s journey becomes a vivid canvas for his reflections on childhood, sexuality, class, and the pursuit of authenticity in a conformist society.

This is a substantial read — clocking in at approximately 430 pages — but well worth the time. Soft copies are available from the usual digital sources, and you can also request a PDF directly from Dale: dalemills@cantab.net. Hard copies may be harder to track down through local libraries and can be on the pricier side via online marketplaces.

We’ll be gathering from 6:00pm, with our formal discussion kicking off at 7:00pm. Look for the sign indicating our semi-private room upstairs at the Shakespeare Hotel.

  • Explore themes of identity, class, and authenticity through a unique narrative lens
