Australian Premiere: Queer As Punk

Get ready for a rebellious journey into Malaysia's underground queer punk scene with Shh…Diam! (Malay for 'shut up!'), a fearless band that's anything but quiet. This compelling documentary follows band members Faris, Yon, and Yoyo as they navigate Malaysia's complex political landscape with an infectious mix of courage, humor, and undeniable charisma.

In a country where queer rights are suppressed and religious state control attempts to dictate identity and desire, Shh…Diam! creates an electrifying safe space for joy, protest, and community. While many LGBTQ+ individuals opt for 'pink migration' seeking safer shores, this remarkable band chooses to stay put, transforming their music into a powerful form of resistance.

Director Yihwen Chen masterfully captures how their high-energy gigs become more than just performances – they're celebrations of identity, platforms for flirtation, and vessels for pure, unadulterated joy. This 88-minute documentary, presented in English and Malayan, offers an intimate look at how punk music becomes a vehicle for queer expression and political resistance.
